Antony Weller

Anthony Weller

Anthony Weller is a photographer from Great Britain that specializes in photographing architecture.  I only found out about him recently, but have fallen in love with his work and hope to emulate his style in my own architectural work.  Weller specializes in photographing new, modern structures which are very pleasing to the eye.  His work includes a vast variety of exteriors, interiors, details, construction photos, living spaces, and industrial work.

This first image (above) shows us an example of one of Weller's exterior shots.  This is a photo of the Glassgow Science Centre in Scotland.  You can see how Weller is an expert at finding the right angle and right lighting conditions for his photographs.  He even took into consideration the wetting of the ground in front of the structure to add visual interest and create a reflection of the structure on the ground.  Time of day and weather conditions are essential for architectural photographers, and Weller has taken both of these into account.  The beautiful blue sky creates contrast against the main structure, which is visually appealing.  The rule of thirds is addressed in this photo, and composition and precision are key in architectural photography.  Weller has mastered his art, and this is why he is so successful at what he does.

This second image (above) is an interior shot by Weller in which a monochromatic scene is made very interesting by the means of repetition and composition.  The way that the hallway curves around to the left and the roof follows this same pattern is very interesing, and also the railings and lights play along with one another to create a very cohesive image. He has made very certain to correct the verticals in this image to maintain the straightness of the columns on the left-hand side.  The way the light spills off the ceiling and onto the wall creates a gradient that is visually pleasing as well.

Overall, Weller has shown through many of his images that he is a master of architectural photography, someone that I can learn from.  If you want to check out more of his work, his website (www.archimage.co.uk) has many more examples of his unique and perfected style.

  1. I can't say that I would personally recommend Anthony Weller after using him on a commission. We arranged that he would shoot a project between 8.30am - 2.30pm. After the shoot, we received an invoice for a full days work and having checked the metadata on the files provided, he did closer to 3 hours work.

When challenged about it there was no offer to pro-rata his time and he got very confrontational.
